Beware Hardwood Edge Crush!

Edge crush is something that millions of people have been afflicted with. This is a serious condition of the wood floors that can lead to total disaster. If you are unlucky enough to be plagued with this terrible problem you could find yourself facing the cost of getting a whole new floor put in. So how can you avoid edge crush and compression set? It is easy, get a professional in to put your wood floor down for you. Just kidding, you can still lay your own floor but you do need to be very careful

The key to laying wood floorboards down right is to make sure that the floor is completely and totally dry. If there is any moisture at all on the sub floor it will get absorbed by the wood planks and when this happens the planks will grow. The problem comes in because of the fact that when you put the floor together it needs to be tight. SO how can the boards expand if there is no room? Where will they go? Nowhere, that is where, instead they will buckle and crack and this is what is called edge crush.

In some cases the floorboards will go back into their normal shape when they dry but more often than not this kind of situation does not have such a happy ending. You will usually have to replace most of your wooden floorboards.

There are other places for the wood to get damp however. For example if the wood was shipped to your home it could have gotten wet. If the wood has been left outside it will most certainly have absorbed some wet as well. If you have a freshly poured concrete slab in the basement this can be enough to make the wood plenty damp. When you receive the wood that is to be used in you home it is essential that you let it dry for at least a week, many experts will tell you to dry it for much longer. This is to help you to avoid things like edge crush and shrinkage.

Shrinking is just as common as swelling and just as deadly. If your floorboards shrink they can leave the floorboards loose and ugly. That is why you need to make sure that your hardwood floor is insulated correctly. This is especially important if the furnace is right under it. With the furnace so close the floorboards are bound to get extra dry. This will eventually leave the room with no wood at the edge.

Houseplants - Bringing The Beauty Of Outdoors Inside

You can bring the outdoors inside very easily with the addition of plants to your home. Most people don’t have the time to care for delicate plants so they choose plants that look good with the minimal amount of looking after. These plants are usually in the families of foliage, flowering, aquatic and cacti. Foliage plants have their attractiveness primarily in their leaves and stay green all year.

Flowering plants are enjoyed for their flower displays, which usually only happen at certain times of the year. Cacti are unusual looking plants, not particularly pretty to the eye unless you have a taking for their design, but they are appreciated for their low maintenance needs. Aquatic plants are water plants, often used to complete the aquarium environment.

The light needs of the houseplant are your first consideration. Some plants require a lot of natural light and will not flourish in shady or dark areas of the house. Similarly, if your home is fortunate to catch the sun, then you need to choose a houseplant that will not wilt or go brown in the sunlight. Perhaps you like the look of a particular sun-loving plant but don’t have the necessary light. You can consider installing infrared lights to create the light wavelengths that the plant needs for nutrition. It is simpler though to buy houseplants that match the environment!

Are you looking for greenery all year round? Then you need to find foliage houseplants. And don’t think this will look boring. Group the foliage plants together, choosing different shades of leaves of varying shapes and sizes. You can create an attractive display without flowers. If you prefer flowering plants, you will need to consider fertilizing at certain times of the year to encourage the flowers. It is best to read up on your particular plants needs to ensure a beautiful display. If you over fertilize, you may just end up with a large, green plant and no flowers!

The size of your houseplants really depends on your preferences, as well as the size of the area you are displaying them in. A group of plants can look as good as one large, spectacular plant but they do need to be positioned aesthetically, with larger ones at the back. Ensure that your houseplants on display do not get in the way. It is very difficult to have a decent conversation while peering through the leaves of a plant! And long, drooping leaves in a walk-way can be irritating. Your houseplants should enhance your decor, not take over!

While we all know that plants need watering, there is a way to ensure that the plant is receiving a sufficient amount. The roots of a plant are in the lower two thirds of the pot. Just pouring water on the top may not reach these roots. Filling up the pot with water will wash away all unnecessary salts from the soil and insure the roots have had an adequate amount. Garden shops sell different water measuring instruments that will help you keep an eye on your plants watering needs.

Garden shops also sell many other materials to help you nurture your houseplants. Fertilizers come in many different forms including pellets, liquid, and powder. Check that the fertilizer is suitable for your plants. If using pellets, keep away from pets which can die from eating them.

For aesthetics, keep your foliage houseplants with shiny leaves looking fresh by periodically dusting and washing them with a damp cloth. There are even solutions for giving them real shine at garden shops if you want them looking their best.

Summary:

Whatever houseplants you choose, with proper care and nurture you can bring the outdoors inside. However, you need to choose carefully to match the plant’s needs with the house environment.

Is Trex Deck Material the Perfect Choice??

Today the potential deck builder has a wider selection of possible deck material alternatives than in previous years.

Pressure-treated wood is most often used for deck supports and framing because of its inexpensive cost and longevity. The deck surface, fascia, railing and step systems are commonly made using cedar, redwood, ipe and red meranti depending upon the homeowner’s budget.

Composite decking like Trex is growing in popularity because it offers outstanding durability without preservatives or sealants, workability that wood cannot match, an elegant natural coloring that stays looking great year after year and is priced slightly above the more expensive natural wood choices.

Trex decking is made from reclaimed and recycled materials. There are 2 ingredients in trex decking; equal parts reclaimed hardwood sawdust and reclaimed/recycled polyethylene plastics such as grocery bags and stretch film. The benefits of the wood fiber are increased stiffness, protection from UltraViolet rays of the sun, the workability of the best grades of lumber and slip resisitance. The plastics used in the creation of Trex decking provide low moisture absorption and also guarantee great chemical and pest resisitance.

The combination of wood and plastic in Trex decking means that it can stand up to anything that Mother Nature can dish out! Structures using composite lumber like Trex have been standing up to the toughest environmental conditions for over 10 plus years.

Purchasing Your Own Iced Tea Maker

Over the last few years, the iced tea maker has become a staple in many kitchens around the country. If you have been thinking about purchasing an automatic iced tea machine for your home, there are several great places to look for one at discounted prices. Here are some tips on where you can purchase your machine at a great price.

Iced tea machines can usually be found at larger discount retail outlets. While the prices in many of these outlets are much more reasonable than going to a kitchen boutique or a more upscale appliance store, you can still get an even better bargain on your purchase if you watch for sales on these types of machines. Typically, you can get a discount off the already low price in early spring, and then again in the autumn of the year, when the peak usage periods have passed. If you can, be on the lookout for sales and stretch your purchasing power a little further.

Online auctions are another excellent source for an iced tea maker. The popularity of the machines has sometimes led to persons receiving multiple units as gifts for birthdays and Christmas. This is good news for you, as many of these unopened and never used tea machines end up as part of an online auction. With a little luck, you can win the bid and have your own machine at considerably less than you would pay in a retail store. Make sure to calculate the postage and handling into your total projected cost before you place a bid. While auctions are great ways to get needed items cheaply, you want to make sure the shipping costs do not cancel out what you saved by not purchasing a unit at a local store.

One thing to keep in mind is that your iced tea maker may come with some special offers that will allow you to try blended teas that have been formulated especially for use with your tea maker. If you like to experiment a little with different flavors in your iced tea, you may want to take a chance on one of these offers. Most of them are free, although you may be required to pay postage and handling costs.

A good quality iced tea maker will last you for a number of years. You can easily set it up and leave in on your kitchen counter if you prefer. Once you get used to making tea with your machine, you will swear that every other method turns out an inferior product. Why not check out a tea machine today?
